Experience

I have tutored students in grades 6-12 from Japanese and American and British schools for 3 years. I have extensive experience tutoring math to students in both Japanese and English. I have taught IB, IGCSE, AP, American school system and Japanese school system curriculum. I have also done a lot of test prep with students for SAT General and Subject Tests, as well as TOEFL iBT and Eiken. My majors are history, comparative literature, and gender studies, and I am very enthusiastic to teach these subjects as well as literature and modern philosophy for high school students. I have written numerous academic papers and essays - two of which have been published - and I am well equipped to coach writing. Additionally, I have taught TOEFL iBT and ESL. I am very knowledgeable about American college applications, especially from a Japanese / international student perspective. I guide students through the Common Application and help revise and edit their personal statements. I am also familiar with the college application process for Japanese universities with English programs (a.k.a. AO entrance exams.) I have a good knowledge of financial aid and scholarship options especially tailored to Japanese students. Teaching is my passion, and I am always excited to meet new students. My number one priority is for students to fully understand the work they are doing and feel genuinely motivated to keep improving. Rather than simply transmitting knowledge, I aim to help students become capable, independent thinkers. I find helping students with college applications very rewarding, since I was in their position two years ago. I have learned that having someone knowledgeable, preferably someone who underwent the same process, is crucial for them to be able to do their best. I care deeply about all my students and their ambitions, and strive to make the process fun and meaningful for the both of us.

Hobbies

I like to spend my time reading books about poststructuralist philosophy, with a focus especially on minority studies (such as feminist theory and critical race theory.) My passion apart from teaching is music - I love to sing jazz and indie songs and play the guitar and piano. I love helping students explore their own interests, and gain the skills necessary to express their passions through their writing. I enjoy debate and won first place for a national debate competition 3 years ago.
